Pilot Program MTC Week 1

Hola mis hermanos y hermanas,

The MTC has been great for me so far. It has only been 2.5 days so I do not know if I will have much to talk about about. But I will start off by saying everyone that told me I just get thrown in the deep end for Spanish and will start everything in Spanish right away and learn about Preach My Gospel right away was wrong. The only reason you guys are wrong is because there is a pilot program in the MTC right now where a couple new districts that are learning Spanish will do the first 10 days in English instruction only. We still have an hour of language study a day because we will have that our whole missions. But right now my teachers do not even know Spanish, they are some of the best teachers in the MTC. It is a great experience and I have been loving it so far. I cannot imagine trying to learn everything about the Gospel while having to learn a new language. It is great to just focus on teaching different people and the different Gospel Doctrine Principles so that I can get to know everything in the Preach My Gospel in English then transfer that knowledge to Spanish. The thing I love most about this program is a lot of people have told us how the first days are hardest in the MTC but it starts to get better after your first Sunday. People in my district have not really felt this way, with how we are able to understand everything that is going on right off the bat and having a lot of fun with it.

My district is amazing. There are 8 of us.. 7 elders y una hermana. So we have 2 companionships a trio and what we call a "solo missionary." A solo missionary is someone who has their companion in a different district. So this means she does not always has to be with her companion because her schedule is different than her companion. My companion is Elder Pattee, he is such a wonderful person. He went to Alta High School and is from Draper Utah. He is a very energetic guy and says "good morning Vietnam" every morning just to get our energy going right off the bat. He is going to the Richmond, Virginia Spanish speaking mission. Then there is Elders Hodson and Todd they are both going to the Texas Houston East (T.H.E) mission Spanish speaking as well and Elder Hodson is from southern California and Elder Todd is from Santana Valley Arizona. Then the trio is Elders Baker, Alley, Bendixsen. Elder Baker is from Gilbert, Arizona and he is going to Knoxville, Tennessee speaking Spanish. Elder Alley is from the great state of San Antonio Texas and is going to the Boston Massachusetts mission also speaking Spanish. Elder Bendixsen is from West Jordan Utah and went to Copper Hills. He is going to the Anaheim California mission speaking Spanish. Hermana Nelson is going to the Calgary, Canada mission speaking Spanish. I am excited to get to know everyone better.

Below is a picture of our view of the Utah-BYU game. I was not able to watch it but heard it was not much of a game. So to all the BYU fans out there, I am so ready for this series to be old enough to get the Aaronic Priesthood 2 years because of the new change in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that when you are turning 12 that year you can get the Priesthood.

Have 10 to write this email

The Internet Cafe closes in 10 minutes. But I wanted to write a quick email to thank all of you for all the support you have given me throughout my life. I cannot be enough grateful for each of you and how you have shaped who I am today. After 19 years at home, so many of you helped me just with your smile or your great example.  The mission is tough. And it is definitely really hard to live with the same person for 7 weeks straight 24/7. I have learned how to be more patient and to talk to Elder Rosas when there is something small that is bothering me. And he has stopped what was bothering me instantly. It is amazing how a small thing could bother me and make me mad sometimes. It was that he said "I do not care" a lot. I do not know why it made me mad but it did. It took some courage to talk to him about it but I feel so much better ever since I did. We are in Juarez right now.. The actually city city. For a council for the 3 branches in our mission. I am excite...

Crazy Week of Traveling

I do not have much time because I am in Ciudad Juarez right now for a conference with the mission president for all of the Branches. So I am going to be short and brief. Friday night we went on an hour bus ride to casa grandes for interviews with the president we had saturday morning. We went back to buenaventura Saturday afternoon. Back to Casa grandes Sunday night. And left at 6 am this morning to Juarez. It was fun to be able to play soccer here with some missionaries.  Polygamy. So everyone in Buenaventura thinks all members of the church of Jesus Christ are Polygamists, because the capital of polygamy is 20 minutes away from Buenaventura.. a place called Lebaron. And to make it worse they call themselves Mormons and that is what everyone thinks we are. So we explain to basically every contact, that we are not trying to change their belief in Jesus Christ. And that we believe in how families are sacred between 1 man and 1 woman. And that families can live together fo...

I thought that I left Utah...

Oh what a crazy week... This week I only had one day where I was in Buenaventura doing regular missionary work all day. But it was such a great week with how I have progressed. We did not see that much progress with the people we are teaching though. Which is kind of sad, because the only way to progress is by doing stuff by yourself and asking the Lord. All we can do is just keep inviting them to do it. And I hope they will. Quick sidenote. The weather here right now is like Utah probably about a month ago. Freezing in the mornings and nights but hot like none other in the days. So we always our carrying around our jackets in our backpacks right now. But it is all great. But that is why I have not left Utah.  Monday... Monday night we got a call from our executive secretary saying I had to go to Migration in Janos (which is 2.5 hours from Buenaventura) early the next morning. And because no buses leave from Buenaventura early in the mornings we had to leave that night to ...
